Suzuki Motor Corporation celebrates its 100th anniversary

March 18, 2020

This year, Suzuki are celebrating its 100th anniversary. It was on March 15, 1920 that Suzuki Loom Manufacturing Company was founded by Michio Suzuki. Since then, Suzuki has expanded its business from looms to motorcycles, automobiles, outboard motors and ATV’s, always adapting to the trend of the times as well as domestic and global markets.

After changing its name to Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd in 1954, Suzuki launched the Suzulight, the first mass-produced mini vehicle in Japan. The company name was then changed to ‘Suzuki Motor Corporation’ in 1990 in view of its business expansion and globalization. The journey of 100 years was never easy, to overcome a number of crises since the foundation, although every member of Suzuki united as one and continued to make the company thrive.

Suzuki has grown to a company with many fans across the globe and even today, its unchanging spirit of manufacturing has been passed on. Marking the beginning of the next century this year, every member of Suzuki is committed to achieve an even greater business.

Director and Chairman, Osamu Suzuki and Director and President, Toshihiro Suzuki shared their message and commented:

‘All members of Suzuki Motor Corporation take this as an important milestone to reaffirm the founder’s philosophy of ‘focusing on customers’ and strive to deliver products to our customers across the globe. Your kind support is truly the greatest factor that has enabled us to always be close to our customers’ daily lives and achieve our commemorative 100th anniversary. We sincerely appreciate your continuous support’

The following table highlights Suzuki milestones since 1920.

A national measure of sentiment across the country, the research asks 45,000 consumers to rate their experiences of dealing with 259 different companies across 13 sectors, including those in the motor industry.

With an improved overall Index score of 84.1 compared to 83 in the January 2019 index, this enabled Suzuki to climb 10 places year-on-year across all companies measured. Suzuki ranked in 1st place of 24 vehicle manufacturers and 11 places in front of the next listed Automotive brand.

The latest index includes a section measurement of brands between January 2018 and January 2020, the average Automotive CSI score was 78.9 points, placing Suzuki way ahead in the Industry.

As part of the survey, customers were asked questions relating to various aspects of the way they were treated when dealing with brands including Experience, Customer Ethos, Emotional Connection and Ethics and Suzuki scored very strongly in all categories. Also worth noting is that of the 259 companies measured across 13 sectors, Suzuki ranked almost as high as John Lewis and Next and tied with Amazon.

Commenting on the results, Nobuo Suyama, Managing Director of Suzuki GB PLC, said: “We are very proud of our achievement to have again been recognised as the best car brand in the Index. Continuing to evolve the Suzuki customer experience has been a core focus during recent years, and the ongoing efforts have clearly paid off.”

He added: “Without the support of our nationwide dealer network, and the hundreds of people that work tirelessly for the brand to deliver exceptional standards for our customers week in, week out, we could not have delivered such a fantastic result. I would like to congratulate everyone who has played a part in this success, and it marks an even greater achievement than before.”

Suzuki steps up its self-charging hybrid models

December 13, 2019

In line with continued plans to further reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel economy across its range of vehicles, Suzuki GB PLC is excited to introduce three 48-Volt Self-Charging Hybrid equipped derivatives to its range in Spring 2020 which will also include the launch of the new K14D Boosterjet petrol engine.

The new Hybrid Powertrain will be introduced for Swift Sport, Vitara and S-Cross models and offer up to 20 per cent lower CO2 emissions, a greater level of torque and 15 per cent overall improvement in WLTP Combined fuel consumption. These models will directly replace the current 1.4-litre Boosterjet derivatives with manual transmission.

Similar in basic principle to the 12V Hybrid SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) system that Suzuki pioneered in 2016 and fitted to all manual transmission models in the Ignis range and Swift SZ5 models, the newly developed 48V Hybrid Powertrain remains very lightweight in design and the components add less than 15kg to the overall weight of the vehicle.

The new and higher-powered Suzuki SHVS system consists of a 48V lithium-ion battery, Integrated Starter Generator (known as ISG) and 48V-12V (DC/DC) converter to power components requiring lower voltage including lights, audio and air conditioning. The ISG acts as both a generator and starter motor, is belt driven and assists the petrol engine during vehicle take off for a higher level of torque with 235Nm available from 2,000rpm.

The compact and high-performance lithium-ion battery stores electrical energy recovered from deceleration and braking and incorporates an idle stop function operated via the Integrated Starter Generator. This battery, along with the DC/DC convertor unit, are located under the front seats to assist overall weight distribution.

A further benefit of the new 48V Hybrid system is the introduction of electric motor idling when the clutch is disengaged and the engine speed is approximately 1,000rpm. This feature essentially replaces fuel injection with power from the electric motor to then control and maintain engine idling at vehicle speeds below 10mph and when stationary.

This function therefore eliminates fuel consumption under these conditions as engine momentum is electrically controlled by the ISG unit and the car is ready to re-accelerate on request with no engine restart delay.

Further detail and full specifications of the three new Hybrid models will be announced in advance of media and public launch which is planned for March 2020.
