Suzuki Jimny review by Paul Beard

We loaned our Suzuki Jimny demonstrator to motoring writer and loyal Tracks customer, Paul Beard. Here’s what he had to say:

“Over the years, the Suzuki Jimny has become a motoring icon and actually traces its roots back half a century to the first LJ variant launched in 1970. The latest version of Suzuki’s evergreen offroader made its much-anticipated debut here at the start of 2019, with a much boxier design that has been likened to Mercedes’ G-Wagen and Land Rover’s original, and now defunct, Defender – icons in their own right. It is a diminutive version of these of course but also costs a lot less. Don’t think that the cheaper price tag and smaller size makes the Jimny any less capable; it has enormous off-road ability and is renowned in its sector.

This particular car, which was very kindly loaned to me by Tracks Suzuki, Exeter for the weekend, is clothed in a very sharp ‘Brisk Blue’ coat of paint which really stands out, gaining a number of approving looks and comments from friends and passers-by. When I parked in the supermarket car park, a 2004 Jimny pulled in next door and the driver commented what a lovely car the new model was and said “Want to do a swap?” – he had owned his since new and still loved it. That’s the thing with the Jimny, it has a large loyal following and appeals to all sorts of people and for many different reasons. The exterior design, as I mentioned, is boxy and now has a really sharp appearance where the outgoing model was a bit rounded and out of date looking. In this the higher SZ5 spec, you get LED headlights with power wash, rear privacy glass, 15″ alloy wheels and heated mirrors. This being Tracks’ demo car, they wanted to up the spec to show what is achievable, so the wheels and roof are painted black, there are side window air deflectors, silver front bumper and side sill trims and most noticeably, of course, are those fantastic looking BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres. For my review, I kept to roads but actually found it more pleasurable an experience than I expected. There are some drawbacks though, as we will discover.

Jimny is a three-door car and so the doors are wider and access to the driver’s seat is easy. Once safely ensconced, you realize what a great little cabin this is. Admittedly, there isn’t a huge amount of elbow room, especially when two up but you do sit high up and get a great view across the fully visible bonnet. The seats are comfy and heated for those chilly starts and it is easy to get an ideal driving position; all controls fall easily to hand too. In front of you is an easy to read dash cluster that looks quite retro with its two square bezels surrounding the speedo and rev counter and the orange on black numbers. In the middle, there is a really handy touchscreen infotainment system and this includes sat-nav, DAB radio and shows what the optional rear camera sees. A chunky, leather-clad, three-spoke steering wheel houses controls for cruise control, volume and telephony. Storage on the other hand is not great, with narrow door bins, small glovebox and a token tray in front of the two gear levers. On the flip side of this though is that as accessing the rear seats is very tricky, unless you are a contortionist, and even if you do complete this task, the experience is not one of comfort, why not keep the seats folded and have a nice big load area for shopping, or animal food, or horse tack, or a dog, or… you get the picture!

You don’t buy a Suzuki Jimny if you want to go fast: top speed is 90 MPH and the 0-60 dash takes about 14.5 seconds. However, if you like sitting up high in a rugged little 4×4 that will take you on many adventures, on the road and off, this is the car for you. With its brick-like styling, permanent four-wheel drive and low ratio gears, all conspiring to increase the amount of fuel required, the average of 36 MPG isn’t too bad at all and CO2 at 178 is bearable. Out on the open road, I found the Jimny to be a fun little car that is easy to drive and you soon get used to the gear whine that comes through. With the chunky tyres, potholes and bumps are easily soaked up and the ride is not bad considering what sort of car this is; the steering has a good feel but is not greatly communicative. Roll in corners is to be expected and is certainly present; again though it could be worse. I was impressed with the braking: there is a solid feel under your foot and competent stopping power when required. This is a more robust feeling car than other Suzukis but then it needs to be bearing in mind the off-road capability that allows you to pretend you are a mountain goat! This is achievable thanks to Suzuki’s All Grip permanent four-wheel drive system and low transfer box.

Basically, I loved this little Jimny. It was funky, cheeky, stylish, fun and stands out in the crowd due to the lovely blue paint scheme, more muted colours are available if you don’t want to be so conspicuous, and square design. On the flip side though, storage is not great, it only has two doors, it’s not that economical and it’s a bit noisy at times – not terribly practical then. If these niggles don’t worry you and you want something a bit different that can take you just about anywhere you want and parks in space that most cars would struggle with, this could be the car for you. There are still cars available but you’ll have to be quick if you want one. I am very grateful to Tracks Suzuki, Exeter for the loan of this Jimny.”

I don’t normally take the time to complete a review but I believe that Tracks Suzuki, Exeter is worth it. I Purchased a Polestar 2 from Tracks in... August 2025 whilst on holiday, which hopefully puts in to perspective how confident I was in the company. It started with speaking to Will on the phone and almost immediately I felt confident he was a cracking salesman. I had a mrs and 2 young kids in tow and at no point did I feel the process was being dragged out. Within 20mins I had a test drive, discussed finance (which was a pleasure and completely transparent with the use of a broker sorted by Will) I have purchased loads of cars and never had the freedom to pick my own finance and Apr which ended up being the lowest I had been looking at. The smooth sailing continued until there was an issue with the finance (my fault as I hadn’t brought my licence on holiday for proof of ID) BUT Tracks sorted this and managed to contact the broker and another finance company was chosen, again the problem was all on me yet they sorted it. The car was purchased and ready to go the next day, due to my issues with the ID and finance the finance company was taking an age to get it done BUT yet again Tracks came through sales, sales manager and the director were all involved just so I could get the car that day, which with there help it was pushed through. I honestly can’t really do the review justice of how good the company was and is. At no point did I feel I was a problem (even though I was), at no point did I feel pressured into buying anything extra, the car was in a really good condition, it was clean and tidy and had a wash prior to me getting it and a full charge. The communication didn’t stop after the sale either. The after sales again was amazing checking how the car was and how I was with the car. The fact that the car wasn’t a Suzuki either was impressive, the sales team were knowledgable about all the cars on the lot no matter what make or model they were. I would recommend this company 100%. Has that family run business feeling about it and they would honestly do anything for you.read more

I have used Tracks of Exeter for the past 7 years, amazing service, I recently helped my granddaughter buy her first car, Suzuki Swift, after a month... a little niggle with the air con appeared, taking it in today I mentioned to Anita that there were 2 other very minor issues, no problem, we will sort that whilst it's here and they did. Sitting in reception I was amazed at the number of customers that were booking their next service before they left.Thank you Anita and Tracks for looking after us. Customer service at its very best.read more

Bought a Vitara from Tracks in June. Sales man (William Stoyle) was great. Handled everything perfectly. Treated my wife and myself exceptionally... well, without any pushy hard selling techniques. This made the purchase process easy and satisfying. As for the car- we drove it back to the north of Scotland and have just completed a road trip around the NC500. Car has been great and look forward to keeping it for years to come. Thanks William and Tracks.read more

It is always a pleasure to visit Tracks in Exeter. The staff are all so helpful and friendly. This was my first service after buying a Swift from... them a year ago. We have the monthly payment plan and it was a nice surprise to hear that we had nothing to pay! Nice surprise also when we were told about the after-service guarantee. It was a lovely sunny day and so we took a walk along the Canal just a few minutes walk away.while we were waiting for the work to be completed.read more

EDIT:I am pleased to say this was resolved satisfactorily and therefore I have adjusted the star rating from 1 star to 4. Many thanks. We are... normally so impressed with the customer service at Tracks Suzuki however a couple of weeks ago I feel it was lacking somewhat. I had my car booked in for a service and MOT which was carried out in good time considering it needed a few repairs, one of which was a slow puncture on a tyre from a nail. I was assured that a repair had been successfully carried out and I left to make the hour long journey home. After about 10 minutes on the motorway, the tyre pressure warning light came on indicating that the tyre pressure had dropped to 28. I called Tracks as soon as I got home and they graciously offered to refund the cost of the repair, and that I take it to a local tyre repair place to get it fixed as we live so far away. The next day, when I turned the engine on the tyre pressure warning light was now saying the faulty tyre was at 18, which is near enough a flat tyre. I drove straight to a local tyre repair place whereby they then proceeded to tell me that the repair had been so badly carried out they were unable to re-repair the tyre and that I would need a brand new tyre. They told me I could take a video of them pouring the fluid onto the repair which I did, and you can see how badly cracked it was and bubbling. They also mentioned how they were happy to speak to Tracks Suzuki directly about the matter, which I felt was very honest.I then called Tracks Suzuki and spoke to David Upton, to explain what had happened and if they were willing to offer any compensation towards the cost of the new tyre, to which I was laughed at and told that they would never have done a bad repair, and that he had to go as he had "people shouting at him". Considering how quickly the tyre pressure warning light came on during my drive home, it is quite clear that this was indeed a bad repair, and a dangerous one at that. Not only do I feel this is completely unacceptable, as I was sent home to drive a long way on a faulty tyre (at 8 months pregnant I might add), but the way in which it was handled was dismissive and unprofessional. It has left a sour taste in our mouths and although we will lose out on our lifetime guarantee, unless this is rectified satisfactorily, we will not be using Tracks Suzuki for any further business again.read more

Well, I went to post a new review and found that I hadn’t hit the “post” button on this one from June last year, so it will do instead!……It is a 100... mile round trip for me to have my Vitara serviced by Tracks and, as always, on 4th June it was well worth it. Always treat my like a really valued customer. They really went the extra mile this time - I couldn’t believe it when I returned to my car not only to find it immaculately washed and cleaned inside, but they had also somehow managed to remove a horrible red paint scrape on the side of the car which someone had left whilst my car was parked months ago. I hadn’t managed to get the mark off in months of trying. I hadn’t asked them to do this - well done Tracks. It is so rare to be delighted like this.read more

Can't find any fault with Tracks at all. I wanted to buy a car with no stress or issues (if ever there was I should just hand the keys over) & they... haven't disappointed. Will has always gone out of his way to support, whether its sales, questions or servicing nothing is ever to much trouble or an issue. He has communicated with me directly throughout my purchase and since. Unlike other garages I've only really had to deal with Will for everything, he takes pride in his work and won't send you on a wild goose chase. The rest of the team I've met are down to earth, lovely open and honest, as I've said I haven't had to deal with them really but I can't imagine they would be any different. All in all Tracks is a refreshing experience to not only buying but owning a car, top marks all round!read more

Had new Swift sports twice now and was a bit sad it was being stopped so we bought a new Swift Ultra 1.2 and what a difference it’s amazing. It’s... still pleasantly nippy and the extras are just never ending and they are extremely nice to drive makes me want to keep going out for a drive. One extra which I found yesterday was the adaptive cruise control I did not have a clue about. On the motorway I always set the speed so I did with the ACC and the car drives itself take your feet off the accelerator and away it goes it keeps a set distance from the car in front and if he slows down so do you and it’s a set distance from the car behind you and stays within the speed limit. If the car in front keeps slowing down you indicate to change lanes and away you go accelerating on its own to the speed limit if you change lanes without indicating the car gently turns back into your lane. The extras on this car more than make up for not having a sport it makes the drive so much more enjoyable and the staff at Tracks Exeter are brilliant with sales service and anything else and the new Ultra has everything and more. The car also has a camera in the radio/satnav screen that checks your fave to see if your getting drowsy at the wheel I assume it then sounds an alarm.read more

All i... can say is none of them were a patch on the Tracks team. (William Stoyle mainly). Not just other car dealers but a lot of businesses that come in contact with the public can learn a hell of a lot from this team and their methods.I have to say a massive thankyou to William Stoyle separately. The really good reviews on Google helped me in my decision to choose to visit this dealer, and I am here to add to the praise for Tracks Suzuki and... in particular the salesman William Stoyle. My purchase was super straight forward, from the ease of arranging the test drive, to the completion of all the paperwork and the collection of the car. William was really helpful, knowledgeable and genuine, a pleasant change from some other sales people I'd encountered in my search for a car.Hats off and thanks to the team who prepared the car, and applied the very competitively priced ceramic coating. The car looked as good as it could when I collected it, so very shiny!I'm hoping this car will last me for some time, but when it comes to replacement time Tracks Suzuki will be top of the list of dealers to visit.read more
