Time is running out… Beat the road tax increase from April 1st

This year the government will implement a new system of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) and we think it’s important that you’re aware of the changes because it might have a big impact on you.

The new way in which road tax will be calculated won’t affect your existing car, but if you’re planning on buying a new car after 1st April 2017, then you could face a significant additional tax payment, hence it might be advantageous to change your car now rather than wait a couple of months to do so.

To help you avoid any costly surprises, we’ve put together a quick guide to help you understand how VED works at present and how it will work from April 2017 onwards.

How does the system work at present?

All cars registered before 1st March 2001 are taxed according to their engine size, with those below 1,549cc charged an annual rate of £140 and those above, £230.

Since March 2001, all new cars have been taxed based on their CO2 emissions, measured in grams per kilometre. The levels of CO2 are split into 13 bands, ranging from A (up to 100g/km) to M (over 255g/km), with each band attracting a different VED charge, calculated on a sliding scale.

There are also two rates per band, a first year rate that’s applied to the car the year it’s registered, and a standard rate that’s applied thereafter. For cars that emit low levels of CO2 both rates are the same, but for cars from Band H upwards the first year rate is significantly higher in an attempt to alert buyers to a cars high CO2 emissions.

In short, the point of the current system is to encourage the purchase of less polluting cars.

Why does the current system have to change?

As car manufacturers have reduced CO2 emissions, an increasing number of small and medium-sized cars now fall into tax bands A, B and C or £0, £20 and £30 VED per annum, which has become unworkable for the government. As a result, the government has devised a new system which, it claims, will make the whole system more sustainable.

How will the new system work?

As is already the case, the incoming VED system is designed to favour buyers of less polluting cars, although they’ll now be an even stronger weighting towards zero-emission or very low emission cars. Only zero-emission cars will remain fully exempt from VED and even these are subject to certain conditions.

From 1st April 2017, all new cars registered will still be subject to the 13 tax bands linked to their CO2 emissions, however, new bands have been created for cars emitting less than 100g/km CO2. The lowest first year rate will start at 1-50g/km with a charge of £10, rising in bands to £120 for a car emitting 91-100g/km. Compare this with the present system where cars under 100g/km pay nothing and the new VED rates are clear.

At present, the Suzuki Celerio SZ3 at 99g/km attracts no VED, but from April 2017 the same car will be liable for a first year tax rate of £120 then £140 each year thereafter.

Similarly, the new Suzuki Ignis SZ-T at 104g/km will increase from zero to £140 in its first year and £20 to £140 from then on.

In the above examples, you might have noticed that both cars face a standard rate VED charge of £140 under the new system? That’s because from April 2017, the CO2 determined bands will be replaced by a flat-rate charge of £140 from the second year and beyond – regardless of the cars emissions. On top of that, cars costing more than £40,000 to buy will be subject to an additional £310 annual taxation for five years.

Will my current car be taxed under the new system?

No – that’s the good news and that’s why it might be beneficial to buy yourself a new car before April 2017 so that you can continue to be taxed under the current system.

Inevitably, the changes to VED brings both good and bad news.

The good:

  • If you buy a car before the end of March 2017, you’ll pay less road tax than if you delay your decision and buy after the system changes.
  • If you buy a car before the end of March 2017, you’ll pay less road tax than if you delay your decision and buy after the system changes.
  • If you buy a car emitting less than 100g/km CO2, you’ll be even better off since such cars attract no VED under the current system.
  • The new standard flat-rate is simpler than the current emissions-based one.
  • All cars over 40 years old will be considered classic vehicles and aren’t liable for VED.

The bad:

  • Cars that attract no road tax today will do so under the new system regardless of which band they fall into, with £140 VED every year from their second year.
  • The new system may discourage people from buying low-emitting cars – the AA reports 59% of its members say there’ll be no incentive to buy low CO2 emission cars under the new system.
  • Only expensive, pure electric and hydrogen cars will pay no road tax.
  • There’ll be a huge new car demand spike before April 2017 that might not benefit consumers.

We hope you’ve found this guide helpful, please get in touch if you have any questions regarding the reforms to VED.

I don’t normally take the time to complete a review but I believe that Tracks Suzuki, Exeter is worth it. I Purchased a Polestar 2 from Tracks in August 2025 whilst on holiday, which hopefully puts in to perspective how confident I was in the company. It started with speaking to Will on the phone and almost immediately I felt confident he was a cracking salesman. I had a mrs and 2 young kids in tow and at no point did I feel the process was being dragged out. Within 20mins I had a test drive, discussed finance (which was a pleasure and completely transparent with the use of a broker sorted by Will) I have purchased loads of cars and never had the freedom to pick my own finance and Apr which ended up being the lowest I had been looking at. The smooth sailing continued until there was an issue with the finance (my fault as I hadn’t brought my licence on holiday for proof of ID) BUT Tracks sorted this and managed to contact the broker and another finance company was chosen, again the problem was all on me yet they sorted it. The car was purchased and ready to go the next day, due to my issues with the ID and finance the finance company was taking an age to get it done BUT yet again Tracks came through sales, sales manager and the director were all involved just so I could get the car that day, which with there help it was pushed through. I honestly can’t really do the review justice of how good the company was and is. At no point did I feel I was a problem (even though I was), at no point did I feel pressured into buying anything extra, the car was in a really good condition, it was clean and tidy and had a wash prior to me getting it and a full charge. The communication didn’t stop after the sale either. The after sales again was amazing checking how the car was and how I was with the car. The fact that the car wasn’t a Suzuki either was impressive, the sales team were knowledgable about all the cars on the lot no matter what make or model they were. I would recommend this company 100%. Has that family run business feeling about it and they would honestly do anything for you.

I have used Tracks of Exeter for the past 7 years, amazing service, I recently helped my granddaughter buy her first car, Suzuki Swift, after a month a little niggle with the air con appeared, taking it in today I mentioned to Anita that there were 2 other very minor issues, no problem, we will sort that whilst it's here and they did. Sitting in reception I was amazed at the number of customers that were booking their next service before they left.Thank you Anita and Tracks for looking after us. Customer service at its very best.

Bought a Vitara from Tracks in June. Sales man (William Stoyle) was great. Handled everything perfectly. Treated my wife and myself exceptionally well, without any pushy hard selling techniques. This made the purchase process easy and satisfying. As for the car- we drove it back to the north of Scotland and have just completed a road trip around the NC500. Car has been great and look forward to keeping it for years to come. Thanks William and Tracks.

It is always a pleasure to visit Tracks in Exeter. The staff are all so helpful and friendly. This was my first service after buying a Swift from them a year ago. We have the monthly payment plan and it was a nice surprise to hear that we had nothing to pay! Nice surprise also when we were told about the after-service guarantee. It was a lovely sunny day and so we took a walk along the Canal just a few minutes walk away.while we were waiting for the work to be completed.

Really good experience at Tracks. Sales staff were personable but not pushy, so I never worried I was being cajoled or scammed. I also paid for a reverse camera to be installed and a manager who lives local to me collected the car and bought it back after the install. They even gave the car a wash! I would recommend them and they will be my first call next time I need a new car.

EDIT:I am pleased to say this was resolved satisfactorily and therefore I have adjusted the star rating from 1 star to 4. Many thanks. We are normally so impressed with the customer service at Tracks Suzuki however a couple of weeks ago I feel it was lacking somewhat. I had my car booked in for a service and MOT which was carried out in good time considering it needed a few repairs, one of which was a slow puncture on a tyre from a nail. I was assured that a repair had been successfully carried out and I left to make the hour long journey home. After about 10 minutes on the motorway, the tyre pressure warning light came on indicating that the tyre pressure had dropped to 28. I called Tracks as soon as I got home and they graciously offered to refund the cost of the repair, and that I take it to a local tyre repair place to get it fixed as we live so far away. The next day, when I turned the engine on the tyre pressure warning light was now saying the faulty tyre was at 18, which is near enough a flat tyre. I drove straight to a local tyre repair place whereby they then proceeded to tell me that the repair had been so badly carried out they were unable to re-repair the tyre and that I would need a brand new tyre. They told me I could take a video of them pouring the fluid onto the repair which I did, and you can see how badly cracked it was and bubbling. They also mentioned how they were happy to speak to Tracks Suzuki directly about the matter, which I felt was very honest.I then called Tracks Suzuki and spoke to David Upton, to explain what had happened and if they were willing to offer any compensation towards the cost of the new tyre, to which I was laughed at and told that they would never have done a bad repair, and that he had to go as he had "people shouting at him". Considering how quickly the tyre pressure warning light came on during my drive home, it is quite clear that this was indeed a bad repair, and a dangerous one at that. Not only do I feel this is completely unacceptable, as I was sent home to drive a long way on a faulty tyre (at 8 months pregnant I might add), but the way in which it was handled was dismissive and unprofessional. It has left a sour taste in our mouths and although we will lose out on our lifetime guarantee, unless this is rectified satisfactorily, we will not be using Tracks Suzuki for any further business again.

Well, I went to post a new review and found that I hadn’t hit the “post” button on this one from June last year, so it will do instead!……It is a 100 mile round trip for me to have my Vitara serviced by Tracks and, as always, on 4th June it was well worth it. Always treat my like a really valued customer. They really went the extra mile this time - I couldn’t believe it when I returned to my car not only to find it immaculately washed and cleaned inside, but they had also somehow managed to remove a horrible red paint scrape on the side of the car which someone had left whilst my car was parked months ago. I hadn’t managed to get the mark off in months of trying. I hadn’t asked them to do this - well done Tracks. It is so rare to be delighted like this.

Can't find any fault with Tracks at all. I wanted to buy a car with no stress or issues (if ever there was I should just hand the keys over) & they haven't disappointed. Will has always gone out of his way to support, whether its sales, questions or servicing nothing is ever to much trouble or an issue. He has communicated with me directly throughout my purchase and since. Unlike other garages I've only really had to deal with Will for everything, he takes pride in his work and won't send you on a wild goose chase. The rest of the team I've met are down to earth, lovely open and honest, as I've said I haven't had to deal with them really but I can't imagine they would be any different. All in all Tracks is a refreshing experience to not only buying but owning a car, top marks all round!

Had new Swift sports twice now and was a bit sad it was being stopped so we bought a new Swift Ultra 1.2 and what a difference it’s amazing. It’s still pleasantly nippy and the extras are just never ending and they are extremely nice to drive makes me want to keep going out for a drive. One extra which I found yesterday was the adaptive cruise control I did not have a clue about. On the motorway I always set the speed so I did with the ACC and the car drives itself take your feet off the accelerator and away it goes it keeps a set distance from the car in front and if he slows down so do you and it’s a set distance from the car behind you and stays within the speed limit. If the car in front keeps slowing down you indicate to change lanes and away you go accelerating on its own to the speed limit if you change lanes without indicating the car gently turns back into your lane. The extras on this car more than make up for not having a sport it makes the drive so much more enjoyable and the staff at Tracks Exeter are brilliant with sales service and anything else and the new Ultra has everything and more. The car also has a camera in the radio/satnav screen that checks your fave to see if your getting drowsy at the wheel I assume it then sounds an alarm.

I had been looking for a long time for a particular vehic oking for so long i met and spoke to a lot of car dealers throught the british isles. All i can say is none of them were a patch on the Tracks team. (William Stoyle mainly). Not just other car dealers but a lot of businesses that come in contact with the public can learn a hell of a lot from this team and their methods.I have to say a massive thankyou to William Stoyle separately. Its hard to believe this , polite, patience and knowledgeable young man is only 19. ???!!!!. You have a very bright future ahead of you sir and i wish you all the very best...

The really good reviews on Google helped me in my decision to choose to visit this dealer, and I am here to add to the praise for Tracks Suzuki and in particular the salesman William Stoyle. My purchase was super straight forward, from the ease of arranging the test drive, to the completion of all the paperwork and the collection of the car. William was really helpful, knowledgeable and genuine, a pleasant change from some other sales people I'd encountered in my search for a car.Hats off and thanks to the team who prepared the car, and applied the very competitively priced ceramic coating. The car looked as good as it could when I collected it, so very shiny!I'm hoping this car will last me for some time, but when it comes to replacement time Tracks Suzuki will be top of the list of dealers to visit.

This Suzuki dealership is simply the Best! Service just done in an jiffy, all with a smile and recognition of myself and my husband. Lovely to see staff who stay and who know us, so we are greeted by name and welcomed as friends, indeed, I have never known them greet anyone without curtesy and respect. The cars are fabulous and I am now on my second Ignis, which is brilliant fun and really zippy. Highly recommend this team, can't fault them in any way!!

Contacted Jack to try & purchase a new Jimny. Unfortunately, they could not supply what I was looking for in the required timeframe & bought elsewhere.
